Interesting article from BBC on a relatively new start-up, Tango, which is a free mobile video-calling service for smartphones over 3G, 4G and wi-fi connections. (I’ve already started to download it… )

It’s about their massive growth in the past 18 months, and more specifically on how the co-founder, Eric Setton, spends a third of his time on recruitment! There are a few points, (amongst quite a few) that I wanted to highlight for any business wanting to build the right team.

  1. “The best engineers want to work with the best engineers” Having equally qualified and equally passionate colleagues helps drive productivity and positivity in the workplace. A win-win for everyone!
  2. “The best engineers want to “attach their names to something that is meaningful that didn’t exist before”.  Not only do people want to be a part of the next big thing, they also get that feel good feeling from making a difference in the world!
  3. Location – Tango opened an office in Beijing a year ago, and has a great team of 15 that they hired from the talented pool of engineers in the area – without the same competition they face in Silicon Valley (and Facebook and Twitter have not yet opened there)
  4. “A fast-turn around time on hiring” – many candidates have experienced the agony of waiting to hear back from an interview! Some of Tango’s employees were interviewed in the morning and left with a signed offer in the afternoon!
  5. “Two-person decision” – Tango often invites candidates’ partners and families to visit the company and experience the corporate culture for themselves. They believe that everyone has to be on board and “rooting for the company too”.
