Is Having a LinkedIn Profile Enough?

by Louise on Sep 14, 2021

As recruiters, we’ve spoken with many candidates who have created LinkedIn profiles but are not active. Are you amongst the group of job seekers who are inactive? This is your reminder to start engaging.

Over the years, LinkedIn has become a top-rated platform; just like every other social media platform, you can engage and gain followers (or, in LinkedIn’s case, connections). In other words, there are slight differences between Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, but what makes LinkedIn stand out? You can utilize the platform as a way for personal branding and promote yourself to catch the eyes of potential employers.

How to be More Engaging on LinkedIn

Many people find that LinkedIn is ineffective, and while CML has our views on LinkedIn vs Recruitment agencies, the platform poses a big help in building connections. However, is having a profile enough to get your name out there? The answer is no, not at least if you want to reap the benefits of it. It is also not enough to create a mediocre profile and add a few points – you need to make your profile engaging!

It is one thing to have a profile and another to be actively engaging. So, what should you do to boost your profile and engagement?

 1. Have a clean, professional profile picture.

 2. Frequently update your profile – Add your skills, experience, and interest, so people get to know you.

1. You can now attribute specific skills you add to your profile to the different jobs you have listed on your profile, which can give potential employers a better idea of your experience in a specific role.

 3. Inform your connections about your accomplishments – New jobs, talents or organizations you are enrolled in.

 4. Follow jobs/industries/companies that are interesting to you and keep up to date with them.

1. When a recruiter goes onto LinkedIn, they have a different view than you to help them search for potential candidates, and there is a quick way to search for those already engaging with their company. So, if you’re interested in a potential job with company X, follow them to show that interest to the recruiters!

 5. Connect with the right people – Current/past colleagues, friends and people you meet out at networking events!

 6. Cheer others on!

1. LinkedIn is all about making connections. Connect with others and spread motivation when you see something they have posted!

Some have described LinkedIn as an “online resume”, but it can be so much more! Unlike a paper resume, you can make changes easily at any time, even on the road. It also gives you access to conversations and information that can be genuinely invaluable.

To fully take advantage of LinkedIn, it’s necessary to give some time and thought to what you want to achieve. It’s time to get ahead of the game and spruce up your profile.
