Life in Cayman: Shopping

by Tiffany on April 21, 2011

Are you new to Cayman or looking to relocate soon? Let’s get down to the important subject… shopping in the Cayman Islands!

When you’re moving away from home one of the things you will think about is whether you will be able to buy your favourite clothes, make-up etc.. (well maybe this isn’t such a concern for men), but for the ladies, this is something our candidates ask when making the move to Cayman. Now I would love to be able to tell you that Cayman has a huge TopShop or a John Lewis, but unfortunately it doesn’t… and shopping is probably the main thing, after my family of course, that I miss about home!

Clothing

I would advise anyone who is thinking about making the move to Cayman to stock up on summer clothes and shoes while you can, because whilst you can find these things on the island they may come with a hefty price tag. Some of the best shops on the island are in Camana Bay (sort of an upscale outdoor shopping centre/town), JMichael and various smaller boutiques.

That said, if you do feel the need for a shopping spree, you can take part in a time-tested Caymanian tradition which is heading up to Florida for a long weekend to do some shopping in Miami, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale or Orlando and get what you’ve been craving.

Duty-Free Shopping

To finish on a positive note, there are some things (jewellery, perfume, designer handbags/sunglasses and some makeup brands) that actually are cheaper in Cayman than back home thanks to duty-free shopping.

Jewellery is an important one for me and my fiancé as we’ve recently been on the hunt for wedding bands, and also what limited make-up you can find on the Island, generally limited to Clinique or MAC, is much better value than in the UK or US.
