5 Things To Do When You Are Rejected From a Job

by Louise on April 21, 2011

Being rejected from a job can be unsettling and can plummet your motivation.

No one enjoys being rejected from a job they have worked hard to show their interest in and have likely been sitting with their fingers crossed over. However, it is up to you to keep your head high through the tribulations; rejection is an unfortunate part of the job searching process, so it’s better to learn what to do when you are rejected from a job so you can handle this rejection with grace and learn from it. Here are four things to keep in mind and implement today.

What to do When You Have Been Rejected From a Job

It May Not Have Been You

When hearing “No thanks” or reading “We went with another candidate”, it is easy to take things personally, especially after working hard to impress the masses. Do not take rejection personally. Keep in mind that no matter how qualified you are for a role, you can never know the qualification of your opponents. Receiving a heavy “no” does not mean you failed; it just means your dream job is still waiting for you. Job searching is a journey!

Use Being Rejected to Gain Insight

Being rejected from a job may be discouraging, but what if we told you that you could use this to gain insight? Sometimes, when failure comes knocking, it is a sign of redirection. Whether you are sad or relieved about the outcome, ask yourself these important questions: Would this job have led me to achieve goals? Was there anything I could have done differently in the process (tailored resume, interview prep, networking)?

It is important to channel your energy into self-evaluating. Furthermore, you will have a better sense of direction and a more preferred outcome in the future.
