Social Media Recruitment – Is It Better Than Traditional?

by Louise on Jul 26, 2011

Is recruitment social media recruitment the way forward? Let’s talk about it!

As technology rapidly changes the way the world communicates and receives information, so too must the way in which recruiters, hiring managers, and HR teams find their top talent. As we’ve spoken about before, we believe Social Media (Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter etc.) has a place in promoting and hiring strategies, but can social media replace traditional headhunting and recruiting?

The Pitfalls of Using Social Media for Recruitment

๏ปฟ

Nowadays, many large organizations hire in-house recruitment teams to drive down the cost of using external agencies. Much like banks who hire in-house Lawyers, this decreases the cost of using external counsels.

The pitfall is that data produced on the candidate become out of date within 3 months. Many organizations have successfully installed highly expensive ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems), which is only somewhere to store information. However, many forget to update the information when the candidate has moved on.

LinkedIn has become highly popular for in-house recruitment teams. However, many fail to realize that all of their competitors use the same tactic. By approaching the candidates directly, organizations do not know they are putting the job search back into the hands of the candidate.

What will happen when a candidate has multiple firms badgering them? The job search process becomes overwhelming. You may lose the candidate rather than persuade them. This is an important reason why candidates themselves work with recruitment agencies.

Are The Candidate’s Data Protected?

The important question is, is the candidate’s data protected on social media? Unlike posting your CV, resume and contact information on social media, traditional recruitment agencies allow candidates to feel secure when sharing their information. Data then is stored in a protected database to which only the recruiters can have access. To us, privacy is a plus!

Conclusion

Additionally, the amazing benefits of traditional recruitment are worth the cost. Social Media can play a significant role, from a branding perspective, in branding you and your organization. Social Media tools are a great way to find information on potential candidates, and it’s a great way to brand yourself, but that is all it is – a tool. Traditional recruitment is the way to go! In the legal and financial world, the art of good headhunting/recruitment is still alive and kicking, and our clients and candidates still see us as trusted advisors.
