A Profile of Today’s Job Seeker

From a survey by the UK website SimplyHired.co.uk, several characteristics differentiate today’s job seeker from those of previous decades. Let’s take a deep look at what today’s job seekers are looking for in their career advancements.

Changes in Job Seekers

Many will agree that the average worker has changed their priorities over the past few decades, such as the “job for life” concept, an almost obsolete idea, with many people having 4 or 5 careers in their lifetime.

Similarly, the job seeker, and what they are looking for in a new job have changed. According to the study, 36% say that a work/life balance is the most important consideration when looking for a job, and 68% believe that men should have more family-related work benefits, such as paternity leave and flexible schedules. The survey also shows that people want to work for eco-friendly companies, with 59% interested in a “green” career and 51% find working for an environmentally-responsible company essential.

But whilst today’s job seeker has a few new demands regarding work/life balance and corporate responsibility, they are also willing to make a few concessions to land the right job. 35% of job seekers would consider relocating, and 38% are willing to take a pay cut to avoid redundancy. Of the job seekers polled, 58% were not planning a summer holiday to search for a job.

One of the other major differences today is the methods of job searching available. With the rise of social media and technology, today’s job seekers must be computer literate and understand the power of social media when planning their job hunt strategy. SimplyHired’s survey found that over half of recently hired individuals used social networking in their job search.

Another interesting fact raised by the survey was that 41% of respondents used a recruiter to find their last job. As recruiters, we can see the entire process from both candidate and client perspectives and work on behalf of both to reach a mutually agreeable conclusion.
