A Lawyer’s Perspective on Relocating to Cayman

by Graham on Aug 26, 2013

Moving to Cayman: It started with an exploratory conversation with CML’s legal consultants about potential offshore career opportunities and resulted in Tom Berry’s move to Cayman, where he has joined Mourant Ozannes‘ Corporate practice. Below, Tom has provided an account of his experiences relocating to Cayman and transition to a life in the Caribbean.

I boarded a plane from London to the Cayman Islands to join the corporate funds team at Mourant Ozannes.

In short, the move has been easy and I am glad to have made it. The staff at Mourant Ozannes have made the transition straightforward and have invested time in training me and helping me settle into my new role. Accordingly, it was not long before I had an understanding of what was expected of me and what I would be advising on. The office atmosphere is collegiate and drinks and lunches are regularly organized to maintain this. The offices themselves are new, impressive and well located being in heart of Camana Bay.

Cayman is a welcoming place and it is not difficult to make friends and socialize here. There is a vast range of activities on offer and I have enjoyed diving and playing touch rugby as well as sports new to me such as cross-fit and sailing. The weather (hurricane permitting) is fantastic and weekends are relaxing and spent in a beautiful location. I am yet to leave Cayman to travel around the region but look forward to seeing more of America and other Caribbean islands as time passes.

A major lifestyle advantage of living in Cayman is that my commute to work is a three-minute drive. I found a car on the listings website Ecaytrade within a few weeks of looking and Century 21 helped me find a well-located two-bedroom rental apartment, with sea views, for less money than the one-bedroom place I was renting in London Bridge. Mourant Ozannes paid for me to have a rental car and to stay in a hotel nearby to the office whilst I looked for both.

I have been admitted as a Cayman Islands attorney and am excited to grow into living and working here – from what I have seen, I expect to enjoy both.
