Position Vacant: Apply Now!

Just a few tips on what to do when applying to CML for jobs in the Cayman Islands via email or in person!

When applying for a position by email:

If you are applying for a position via email, always write a short cover letter in the body of the email (even if you have attached a cover letter as well). If you just send an email with your CV attached (and no text in the email) it can be seen as unprofessional, and some companies may not even bother to open the attachment.

Write a short paragraph introducing yourself and the reason for your email. As this is the first impression that a potential employer will have of you, make it a good impression! If you have attached a cover letter to the email, just say something like:

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is ______, and I am interested in applying for the position of ______.

Please see attached CV and Cover Letter.

I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Kind Regards,
_________

In your attached cover letter, introduce yourself and explain why you feel you would be the perfect fit for the position you are applying for.

When delivering your CV to a company:

Again, first impressions are lasting impressions! You want to make sure that you are remembered for good things!

Dress appropriately. If you are visiting an office, dress smart (either smart casual or office-wear). When you enter the office and speak to a company representative, stand up straight. When you are spoken to, reply in a clear voice. Exude confidence!

If you are applying for an advertised position, explain this to the company representative. Say something like “Hello, my name is ______, and I would like to apply for the ______ position that you are currently advertising. Is there someone I could speak with about this?” If there is someone available to speak with, shake their hand when they come over to see you and introduce yourself again. Maintain eye contact (not in a freaky way)! Now unfortunately I won’t be there to help you figure out what to say next, but just remember to have confidence in yourself, speak clearly and smile!

If no one is available for you to speak with ask for the person’s name who would be overseeing the applications, and ask if you are able to leave your CV (and cover letter!!) for their attention.

Now you also have the name of someone you can call in the future to speak with about the status of your application!

Some companies may not get back to you straight away. Leave it about a week before you start following up. As you can imagine, there might be a lot of people who also feel they are the ideal candidate for the same position that you applied for!

In case you didn’t get the main messages of this blog I will summarize them for you:

  • First impressions are key!
  • Write a cover letter introducing yourself and explaining why you feel you are suitable for the position you are applying for.
  • Be professional at all times. Professionalism means something different to each person, figure out what it means to you!
  • Dress appropriately if you are hand delivering your CV!

In case you were wondering, you can email your CV to CML Offshore Recruitment: info@cmlor.com

You can hand deliver your CV to: The CML Office, Grand Pavilion Commercial Center, West Bay Road.
