Useful Tips to Help You Nail Your Interview

by Louise on May 17, 2011

The interview process is one of the most nerve-wracking parts of any job search. We have all been there – strenuously perfecting our resumes and waiting on the call that states whether you’ve got the interview. As recruiters, the CML Recruitment team has always been asked for expert advice on how to nail the perfect interview, so today, we are sharing our tips!

Expert Tips on Nailing the Interview

1. Do Your Research

Before arriving at an interview, research the company you are applying to. How did they begin? What do they do? What are their visions and missions? What are they trying to promote? It is also good to review your resume to think about your skills and qualifications and be prepared for the questions you might be asked.

2. Look & Act The Part

The most important thing you can do to impress your interviewer is to convince them that you have the right attitude, skills and requirements for the job. Make sure to dress professionally and smartly. Additionally, be prepared to arrive early; If you are on time, you are late, so be there 10 minutes early. It’s incredible what first impressions can do!

3. Ask Questions and Be Interested

Always remember that the interview is not only a chance for the interviewer to assess if you are the right person for the job, but it is also an opportunity to see if the job and the company are the right fit for you. During the interview, you should make sure to answer all questions as well as ask your own when appropriate. I would suggest asking questions that show you’re interested in the position and want to learn more about it, such as ‘What are the main tasks and responsibilities of this position?’ Also, never sell yourself short; make sure you are getting across your strengths and attributes and why you are the right candidate for the role.

From experience, my least favourite question during an interview is, ‘What are your weaknesses?’. This is not because I don’t have any (I’m sure my partner could reel them off) but rather because I don’t want to draw attention to them. Always remember that every negative can be turned into a POSITIVE! Let’s look at a few examples below:

  • How do you handle tension or stress? Thoroughly explain how you avoid stressful situations and, if not, how you deal with them, for example, Communicating, exercising and going to the gym.
  • How well do you take direction? Explain by giving examples of how you can be briefed and finish the task without unnecessary disagreements/complications.
  • Do you prefer working with others or alone? Explain how you can work well in both situations.

4. Be Confident & Honest in the Interview

Finally, I cannot stress enough the importance of being confident and honest. No matter what situation you encounter, honesty is always the best policy! If you are asked a question and don’t know the answer, it is wise to admit to it rather than making something up that will likely be completely wrong. Your interviewer will no doubt be more impressed by you this way!
